Foursquare Rum Distillery

Foursquare Rum Distillery, located in the southern countryside of Saint Philip, Barbados, has a rich history rooted in a former sugar plantation that dates back to the 1720s. While the site's original distill house was built in 1737, the modern Foursquare Rum Distillery was established in 1995 by Sir David Seale, with distilling operations commencing in 1996. The distillery is a flagship operation of R.L. Seale & Co., a family business with rum-making expertise dating back to 1926 when Reginald Leon Seale formed the company as a merchant blender and bottler. Today, the distillery is expertly run by Richard Seale, a fourth-generation distiller and Master Distiller and Blender.

Foursquare Rum Distillery is renowned for producing exceptional and authentic Barbados rum. Their approach to rum-making combines traditional Barbadian methods with contemporary technological innovations. The distillery utilizes coral stone- and karst limestone-filtered water from local aquifers and ferments both locally sourced and Guyanese molasses with a distiller's yeast from South Africa. Distillation occurs in a combination of a double retort copper pot still and a twin column Coffey vacuum still, with the resulting pot and column distilled spirits blended before barreling. The rums undergo tropical maturation in the distillery's four aging warehouses, primarily in ex-bourbon barrels, with some expressions benefiting from secondary maturation in various casks such as Sherry, Port, Madeira, Zinfandel, and Cognac.

Master Distiller Richard Seale is a prominent figure in the rum world, known for his advocacy for truth and integrity in spirits, and he produces rums in strict accordance with the proposed Barbados Rum Geographical Indication (GI) requirements, meaning no added sugars, colorings, flavors, or filtration. This dedication has earned Foursquare a reputation as one of the most respected and admired spirits producers globally, with some even referring to it as "the Pappy of Rum" due to its popularity and numerous accolades.

Foursquare Rum Distillery has garnered significant international recognition for its outstanding products. The distillery's signature series, the Exceptional Cask Selection, has received widespread acclaim. Among its many achievements, Foursquare won the Supreme Champion at the International Spirits Challenge in 2018 for its 2005 expression and again in 2021 for its Redoubtable 14 Year Old rum. The distillery has been named Rum Producer of the Year at the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSC) on multiple occasions, including in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2024, and secured the IWSC Rum Trophy in 2025 for its Equidem. Richard Seale was also recognized as the IWSC's Industry Champion in 2023 and the ISC Master Distiller/Master Blender in 2021. Beyond its premium Foursquare labels, the distillery also produces popular heritage brands such as Doorly's, Old Brigand, and E.S.A. Field.
