Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd.

Tokyo, Tokyo · international · Founded 1934

Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd. traces its whisky back to a single man's obsession with Scotland. Masataka Taketsuru, later recognized as the father of Japanese whisky, studied distilling in Scotland before returning home to found the company in 1934, and the two distilleries he built still define the house style today: Yoichi, coastal and coal-fired, and Miyagikyo, inland and steam-refined.

History & Heritage

Nikka was founded in Tokyo in 1934 as Dai Nippon Kaju Co., Ltd., taking the Nikka name officially in 1952. Taketsuru chose Yoichi, on the coast of Hokkaido, as the site of the company's first distillery, drawn to its cool climate, sea air, and fresh water, conditions he considered the closest match to Scotland he could find in Japan. Asahi Group Holdings acquired a 60 percent stake in the company in 1954 and became the sole owner in 2001, a relationship that has held since. Nikka expanded its reach into Scotland itself in 1989 with the acquisition of the Ben Nevis Distillery, and in 1969 built a second Japanese distillery, Miyagikyo, in a river valley near Sendai, designed from the outset to produce a lighter, more floral counterpart to Yoichi's heavier spirit. As of July 2026, Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., Ltd. remains owned by Asahi Group Holdings.

The Whiskey

The character of Nikka's whisky comes from the deliberate contrast between its two home distilleries. Yoichi still uses traditional coal-fired pot stills, a hands-on, temperature-uneven process that gives its single malt a heavy, oily texture and a smoky, coastal character, produced with wooden washbacks and worm tub condensers rather than modern shell-and-tube condensation. Miyagikyo takes the opposite approach: steam-heated pot stills with bulging necks and upward-angled lyne arms strip out heavier compounds, producing a lighter, fruitier, more floral spirit, made mostly from unpeated malt though some peated batches are also run. Miyagikyo additionally houses Coffey stills, continuous column stills used to produce the grain whisky, bottled on its own as Coffey Malt and Coffey Grain, that anchors many of Nikka's blends. Maturation at Miyagikyo relies mainly on ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, with occasional use of Mizunara oak. Flagship expressions include Nikka Yoichi Single Malt Scotch Whisky, showing the distillery's smoky, robust profile; Nikka Miyagikyo Whisky, its fruitier single malt counterpart; Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt, a blended malt combining spirit from both distilleries and named for the founder; and Nikka Whisky From The Barrel, a blend of more than a hundred malt and grain whiskies bottled at 51.4% ABV after a "marriage" period, in which the finished blend is returned to used casks for several additional months so the components fully integrate before release.

Why It Matters

Nikka's two-distillery model, one built for weight and smoke, the other for lightness and fruit, gave the company a blending palette few producers can match, and the results have been recognized outside Japan as well as within it. Yoichi 20 Year Old was named best single malt at the World Whiskies Awards in 2008, and Nikka Whisky From The Barrel was named Whisky Advocate's Whisky of the Year in 2018, a rare distinction for a blend rather than a single malt. That combination of technical range and international recognition is why Nikka expressions hold a place in the Reserve Whiskey Library at The Sentinel Room for those who appreciate good whiskey and want to taste the difference between Yoichi's coastal smoke and Miyagikyo's floral restraint side by side.

Visiting the Distillery

Both distilleries welcome visitors. Yoichi, a five-minute walk from JR Yoichi Station, offers complimentary guided tours with tastings, conducted in Japanese with English audio guides available; reservations are required for the guided tour, though the museum, shop, and restaurant are open to casual visitors without one. Yoichi closes annually from December 23 through January 7, and on June 11. Miyagikyo also offers free guided tours with tastings, with reservations recommended or required, and headsets available in English, Korean, and Chinese. Free shuttle buses run from JR Sakunami Station to Miyagikyo on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Miyagikyo closes for the New Year's holiday and occasional shutdowns.
