Lagavulin Distillery

Port Ellen, Islay · international · Founded 1816

On the south coast of Islay, where the Atlantic wind carries salt and peat smoke across the water, Lagavulin Distillery has been distilling one of Scotland's most intensely flavored single malts since 1816. The distillery's whisky is built on heavy peat, unusually long fermentation, and a deliberately slow distillation that together produce a smoky, maritime dram widely regarded as a benchmark for Islay whisky.

History & Heritage

Distilling activity at Lagavulin predates its legal founding. Illicit stills are recorded on the site as early as 1742, decades before John Johnston formally established Lagavulin (originally called Kildalton) in 1816. That same year, Archibald Campbell built a second distillery alongside it. Johnston acquired Campbell's operation in 1825, and the two sites merged under the Lagavulin name in 1837.

Ownership passed through a succession of Scotch whisky's most consequential families and companies. James Logan Mackie acquired the distillery in 1862, and his nephew Peter Mackie inherited it in 1889. Under Peter Mackie, the business (known for its White Horse blend) received a Royal Warrant Appointment as purveyor to King Edward VII in 1908. After Mackie's death, the company was renamed White Horse Distillers Limited in 1924, and in 1927 it became part of the Distillers Company Limited (DCL), the dominant force in Scotch whisky at the time. DCL was acquired by Guinness in 1986, and when Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan in 1997, the resulting company, Diageo plc, became Lagavulin's owner, a relationship that continues today.

The Whiskey

Lagavulin draws its process water from the Solum Lochs and its malted barley from Port Ellen Maltings, a supply relationship in place since 1974. That barley is heavily peated, forming the backbone of the distillery's signature smoke. What sets Lagavulin apart from many of its Islay neighbors is time: fermentation runs an unusually long 55 to 75 hours, and distillation is among the slowest on the island, run through four pear-shaped pot stills, two 11,000-liter wash stills and two 12,500-liter spirit stills. The wash stills are filled to 95 percent capacity, which limits contact between the alcohol vapors and the copper still walls and helps the spirit retain a heavier, more flavorful character rather than being polished smooth.

The new-make spirit is matured primarily in American oak ex-bourbon casks and ex-sherry casks, often refill hogsheads, for a minimum of three years, though most expressions spend far longer in wood. The distillery's annual production capacity runs to approximately 1.4 million liters of pure alcohol.

The flagship release, Lagavulin 16 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky, is the standard against which many other peated malts are measured. Lagavulin 8yr Single Malt Scotch Whisky began as a limited release marking the distillery's 200th anniversary and has since become a permanent core expression. Lagavulin 12 Year Old Cask Strength is released annually at full cask strength for a more concentrated, intense pour, and the Lagavulin Distiller's Edition finishes standard stock in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for added sweetness against the peat. Lagavulin 11 Year Sweet Peat Limited Edition Single Malt Scotch Whisky is part of the distillery's Offerman Edition series, a collaboration with actor Nick Offerman.

Why It Matters

Lagavulin's combination of long fermentation, slow distillation, and heavily peated barley produces a whisky with a depth of smoke and maritime character that has made it a reference point for Islay single malt as a category, not just for its own portfolio. Lagavulin 16 Year Old won a Double Gold at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and the distillery has also been recognized with the UK's highest eco-tourism award for its visitor operations. Two centuries of continuous distilling on the same stretch of Islay coastline, through Mackie family ownership, DCL, Guinness, and now Diageo, have kept the house style intact even as the surrounding industry consolidated repeatedly around it.
