Auchentoshan Distillery

Dalmuir, Lowlands · international

Auchentoshan stands apart in Scottish whisky as the last Lowland distillery practicing triple distillation. Where most Scotch sees the still twice, Auchentoshan's spirit passes through three copper pot stills, creating a notably light and approachable character that has earned it the moniker "Glasgow's Malt Whisky."

History & Heritage

Situated in Dalmuir in Scotland's Lowlands, Auchentoshan operates as a working distillery with records of its exact founding remaining unclear. The distillery has maintained its operations for generations, continuing to produce whisky using traditional methods. Today, Auchentoshan welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, with tours available until 3:15 pm.

The Whiskey

Auchentoshan's defining characteristic lies in its triple distillation process, unusual for Scottish whisky but standard in Irish production. This method creates a distinctive profile that sets the distillery apart from its double-distilled Scottish counterparts. Each expression follows the distillery's meticulous approach, described as "hand-dipped, one at a time, every time." The careful attention to production consistency runs through their entire range.

Why It Matters

For those who appreciate good whisky, Auchentoshan represents a unique approach within Scottish production. Its triple distillation method offers something distinct in the Lowlands region, where this technique remains rare. The distillery's commitment to this process, combined with their hands-on bottling approach, makes their expressions noteworthy for anyone exploring the diversity of Scottish single malt production methods.
