Auchentoshan Distillery

Dalmuir, Lowlands · international · Founded 1823

Auchentoshan holds a singular distinction among Scottish distilleries: every drop it produces is triple distilled, a method more commonly associated with Ireland than with Scotland's Lowland region. The result is a spirit that trades peat and heft for lightness, delicacy, and a clean, almost fruit-forward character that has made Auchentoshan one of the more approachable entry points into single malt Scotch whisky.

History & Heritage

Auchentoshan was founded in 1823 by John Bulloch in Dalmuir, on the north bank of the River Clyde near Clydebank, Scotland. The distillery's name derives from the Gaelic for "corner of the field." Ownership passed through several hands over the following century and a half: Alexander Filshie acquired it in 1834, followed by John and George MacLachlan in 1877, then J&R Tennent Ltd. in 1910, and Eadie Cairns in 1969.

The distillery suffered significant damage during World War II when German bombers struck the site in 1941. The resulting bomb crater was repurposed and today serves as one of the distillery's cooling ponds, a physical reminder of that history still in daily use.

In 1984, Stanley P. Morrison acquired Auchentoshan, later folding it into Morrison Bowmore Distillers. Suntory acquired Morrison Bowmore in 1994, bringing Auchentoshan under Japanese ownership. When Suntory Holdings merged with Beam Inc. in May 2014, the distillery became part of Beam Suntory; that parent company was renamed Suntory Global Spirits in 2024. Auchentoshan is owned, as of July 2026, by Suntory Global Spirits, with production and ownership under the same corporate structure.

The Whiskey

What sets Auchentoshan apart on the production floor is process, not geography. Where most Scotch distilleries distill twice, Auchentoshan runs its spirit through three copper pot stills in sequence: a wash still, an intermediate still, and a spirit still, exiting at approximately 81% ABV before cask filling. The distillery uses unpeated malted barley exclusively, reinforcing the lighter, smoother profile rather than any smoke character.

Water for production is drawn from Loch Katrine, roughly 35 kilometers north of the distillery, while Loch Cochno supplies cooling water. Fermentation happens across seven washbacks, four of Oregon pine and three stainless steel, with fermentation times extended to 70 hours specifically to build fruit ester development in the wash. The mash tun is a modern stainless steel semi-Lauter design.

Maturation relies primarily on ex-bourbon American oak barrels and ex-sherry butts, both Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez, with select bottlings finished in French wine casks. The Auchentoshan 12 Year Single Malt Scotch is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-Oloroso sherry casks, while the Auchentoshan American Oak Aged Single Malt Scotch Whisky is matured exclusively in first-fill American bourbon casks, giving it a distinctly vanilla-forward, bourbon-cask-driven profile. Other expressions in the range, including Three Wood and the 18 Year Old, layer additional sherry cask influence on top of the house's signature triple-distillation base.

Why It Matters

Auchentoshan's expressions have collected consistent recognition. The Auchentoshan 12 Year Single Malt Scotch won Gold in the Single Malt Scotch (to 12 Years) category at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2022, following a Silver in 2021, and took a Category Winner honor at the World Whiskies Awards in 2022. The Auchentoshan American Oak Aged Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been especially decorated recently, earning Gold at the World Whiskies Awards in 2024, Gold from the International Spirits Challenge in both 2020 and 2024, and Silver from the International Wine & Spirit Competition in 2024. Auchentoshan Three Wood was named Best Lowland Single Malt at the 2024 World Whiskies Awards. Earlier in the distillery's modern history, its 16- and 18-year expressions earned a Double Gold at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

For those who appreciate good whiskey and are curious about how process alone can reshape a spirit's character, Auchentoshan offers a clear case study: same Lowland terroir, same unpeated barley, but a triple-distillation regimen that produces something markedly different from its double-distilled neighbors.

Visiting the Distillery

Auchentoshan operates a visitor centre and conference facilities, both completed in 2005, and is open to the public for tours daily. Experiences on offer include the Origin Tour, The 1823 Experience, a Signature Whisky Tasting, Cask Exploration: Deconstructing Three Wood, and a Whisky Tour paired with an individual cask warehouse tasting.

The Sentinel Room carries two expressions from Auchentoshan Distillery in its Reserve Whiskey Library: the Auchentoshan 12 Year Single Malt Scotch and the Auchentoshan American Oak Aged Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
