The Glenlivet Distillery

Ballindalloch, Speyside · international · Founded 1824

On a stretch of the River Livet in Speyside, Scotland, sits the distillery that gave an entire style of single malt its name. The Glenlivet was founded in 1824 by George Smith, the first person licensed to distill legally in the Glenvillet region after a change in Scottish law. Two centuries later it remains one of the best-selling single malt Scotch whiskies in the world, and its house style, light, fruity, and approachable, still defines what most drinkers picture when they hear the word Speyside.

History & Heritage

George Smith learned to distill in the Livet valley before riding to Elgin to secure his license in 1824, becoming the first legal distiller in the parish of Glenlivet at a time when illicit stills far outnumbered licensed ones. By the late 1830s the operation was producing more than 200 gallons a week, enough that Andrew Usher & Sons of Edinburgh became its sales agents. After George Smith's death, his son John Gordon Smith continued the business and, in 1884, won the legal right to the name "The Glenlivet" outright, a designation so contested that for decades other distilleries in the valley appended "-Glenlivet" to their own names to borrow its reputation.

The distillery passed through a series of mergers over the twentieth century: George & J.G. Smith Ltd combined with J. & J. Grant of Glen Grant in 1953, and that company merged again in 1970 with Longmorn-Glenlivet Distilleries and Hill Thomson & Co. to form The Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. Seagram acquired the company in 1977. When Pernod Ricard and Diageo jointly purchased Seagram's spirits business in 2000, Pernod Ricard took control of the Chivas Group, and The Glenlivet became part of the Chivas Brothers portfolio. The Glenlivet Distillery is owned, as of July 2026, by Chivas Brothers, the Scotch whisky arm of Pernod Ricard.

The Whiskey

The Glenlivet's house character comes directly from its stills: lantern-shaped pot stills with long, narrow necks that favor lighter vapors and produce a cleaner, more delicate new-make spirit than the shorter, squatter stills used elsewhere in Speyside. The distillery draws its process water from Josie's Well and ferments unpeated malt, much of it sourced from Crisp Maltings in Portgordon, for roughly 50 hours in wooden washbacks. Following a 2010 expansion, the site now runs 7 wash stills and 7 spirit stills alongside 8 fermenters and a 12-ton mash tun, producing an estimated 10.5 million liters of spirit annually. Spirit is matured in a mix of European and American oak casks, with on-site warehouses holding more than 65,000 casks at any given time. Most of that output is bottled as single malt, though a portion goes into Pernod Ricard blends including Chivas Regal.

The core range runs from The Glenlivet 12 Year Single Malt Scotch Whisky through the 15 Year Old French Oak Reserve, the 18 Year Old Batch Reserve, and up through 21 Year and XXV expressions, alongside the non-age-stated Founder's Reserve, created by former Master Distiller Alan Winchester to echo George Smith's original style. In September 2024, marking its 200th anniversary, the distillery released The Glenlivet Eternal Collection First Edition, a 55 Year Old single malt and its highest age statement ever bottled. That was followed in January 2025 by The Glenlivet 40 Year Old, finished in seasoned sherry casks and now the brand's oldest permanent expression.

Why It Matters

The Glenlivet is not simply a brand name licensed onto sourced whisky, it is a working distillery whose 1824 license predates nearly every other legal Speyside operation, and whose name became so synonymous with the region's style that a nineteenth-century court had to settle who was allowed to use it. For those who appreciate good whiskey, the distillery's lighter, fruit-forward profile is the reference point against which much of Speyside is still measured, and its continued investment in extreme age statements, the 55 Year and 40 Year releases among them, signals a brand still pushing its own upper limit two hundred years after George Smith first distilled here legally.
