History & Heritage

Founded in 2013 by Michael Swanson, a fourth-generation farmer, Far North Spirits operates on the same century-old farm his family has worked since 1917. Located in Hallock, Minnesota, the distillery claims the distinction of being the northernmost estate distillery in the contiguous United States. The land itself tells the story: jet-black soil once fed by the ancient waters of Lake Agassiz, now nurturing grains under prairie skies.

The Whiskey

Far North produces what they call "whiskey farmed for flavor," growing single varietal rye and heirloom corn selected for character rather than yield. Their portfolio includes expressions like Roknar Minnesota Straight Rye, Bødalen Straight Bourbon, and single varietal ryes named for their grain varieties: Hazlet, Musketeer, and Oklon. Each varietal brings distinct characteristics, from the warm spice and vanilla of AC Hazlet Winter Rye to the smoke and earthy nuttiness of Oklon. Every step from milling to aging happens on-site, ensuring complete control over the process.

The Distilled Spirits Council recognized their Single Varietal Rye Whiskey as an Innovation Winner, acknowledging what those who appreciate good whiskey already know: grain variety matters as much as barrel and time.
