Jeffersons Bourbon Company
Crestwood, Kentucky · national · Founded 1997
In 1799, a woman named Marian McLain was arrested in Kentucky for producing spirituous liquors without a license. Two centuries later, her eighth-generation descendant, Trey Zoeller, turned that family story into Jefferson's Bourbon, founded in 1997 with his father, Chet Zoeller, as a small non-distiller producer built on sourcing and blending exceptional Kentucky straight bourbon rather than distilling it themselves.
History & Heritage
Jefferson's began as McClain & Kyne, a company built around Trey Zoeller's philosophy that a great bourbon brand did not need its own stills, only a discerning palate and access to Kentucky's best aging stock. That approach carried the brand through its first act, McClain & Kyne was purchased by Castle Brands in 2005, giving Jefferson's the capital to expand beyond its original core lineup.
The turning point came in 2012, when Jefferson's found a permanent home at Kentucky Artisan Distillery (KAD) in Crestwood, Kentucky, opened that same year by Brown-Forman alum Steve Thompson. KAD became the site where Trey Zoeller's experiments, distilling, blending, and bottling for Jefferson's now actually happen, alongside a working laboratory visitors can walk through on tours. As of 2017, roughly a quarter of the barrels aging under the Jefferson's name were distilled at KAD itself, with the majority still sourced from independent Kentucky distilleries, a hybrid model the brand has never hidden.
Ownership changed hands twice more. Castle Brands took a 20 percent stake in Copperhead Distillery Company, KAD's parent, in 2015, then in 2019 Pernod Ricard acquired Castle Brands outright, bringing Jefferson's under the global spirits company's portfolio. Jefferson's Bourbon is owned, as of July 2026, by Pernod Ricard, though Trey Zoeller remains the brand's founder and master blender, still developing the wood and aging experiments that built its reputation. In 2022 Pernod Ricard committed 250 million dollars to a new carbon-neutral distillery and warehouse complex in Marion County, Kentucky, a sign of how far the brand has grown from its sourced-barrel origins.
The Whiskey
Jefferson's built its identity on wood and environment rather than mash bill secrecy. The brand avoids chill-filtration across its lineup to preserve natural oils and congeners for a fuller mouthfeel and bolder aromatics, and its research and development lab at KAD is dedicated almost entirely to non-traditional finishing and aging.
The most recognizable of these experiments is Jefferson's Bourbon Ocean, in which barrels of fully matured Kentucky straight bourbon are loaded onto ships and sent to sea, crossing the equator multiple times and calling at ports around the world. The constant motion, temperature swings, and salt air accelerate wood interaction in ways a static rickhouse cannot replicate. Jefferson's Tropics Aged In Humidity applies a related idea onshore, resting barrels in equatorial humidity, including stints in Singapore, to intensify flavor extraction. Jefferson's Pritchard's Hill Cabernet Cask finishes bourbon in Cabernet Sauvignon casks from Pritchard Hill, and the brand's core lineup, Jefferson's Very Small Batch Bourbon, Jefferson's Reserve, and Jefferson's Rye, ranges from an easy-drinking blend of up to four bourbons to a robust, complex flagship and a straight rye built from hand-selected rye whiskeys.
Why It Matters
Jefferson's proved that a sourcing-and-blending model could still produce genuinely distinctive whiskey, and its wood experiments have influenced how the wider bourbon industry thinks about finishing. The results have been recognized consistently: Double Platinum at the ASCOT Awards in both 2022 and 2023 for the Ocean series, Gold at the 2023 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold at the 2024 World Whisky Awards for Marian McLain, and Silver for Best Kentucky Bourbon at the 2025 World Whiskies Awards. The 2025 Reserve Cask Strength expression added a Gold at the New York International Spirits Competition and a 95-point Spirit Gold rating from the International Wine & Spirits Competition.
