Macallan Distillers
Craigellachie, Speyside · international · Founded 1824
Few names carry more weight in single malt Scotch than The Macallan. Since 1824, this Speyside distillery on the banks of the River Spey has built its reputation on one deceptively simple idea: the cask matters as much as the spirit going into it. That obsession with sherry-seasoned European and American oak has made The Macallan one of the most collected and most imitated whisky brands in the world.
History & Heritage
The Macallan was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a farmer and schoolteacher, on the Easter Elchies estate above the River Spey near Craigellachie, Moray. Reid held one of the earliest licenses granted after the Excise Act of 1823 legalized distilling in the region, putting The Macallan among the first legal distilleries in Speyside.
Ownership moved several times through the 19th century. After Reid's death in 1847 the distillery changed hands, and James Stuart took control in 1868. In 1892, Roderick Kemp purchased the distillery and set it on the path that would define its identity, sourcing sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, and committing to slow, deliberate maturation. After Kemp's death in 1909, the Roderick Kemp Trust was established to keep the distillery under family control, and in 1968 R. Kemp Macallan-Glenlivet Limited listed on the London Stock Exchange.
The following decades brought a series of corporate stakes and mergers: Suntory acquired 25 percent of shares in 1986, Remy Cointreau acquired 26 percent in 1990, and Highland Distillers acquired that Remy Cointreau stake in January 1996. Later that year, Highland Distillers and Suntory formed HS Distillers Ltd, which acquired 51 percent of Macallan. In 1999, Edrington acquired Highland Distillers, making The Macallan a wholly owned subsidiary. The Macallan Distillers Ltd remains, as of July 2026, owned by Edrington. A new distillery and visitor center, built into the hillside above Easter Elchies House, opened in June 2018 and went on to win the RIAS Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award in 2019.
The Whiskey
The Macallan's production is defined by restraint. The distillery uses what it calls "Curiously Small Stills," among the smallest copper pot stills in Speyside, and takes only 15 percent of the new make spirit off each run, the portion known as "the finest cut," to concentrate character and consistency. Water is drawn from the River Spey, and the distillery runs 36 stills in total: 12 wash stills at 13,000 liters and 24 spirit stills at 3,900 liters.
Historically, The Macallan relied on Golden Promise, a lightly peated old barley variety grown under contract with local farmers. But the defining signature of the whisky is wood. The Macallan sources sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera and has built its house style almost entirely around that maturation, a practice that predates the industry-wide shift toward finishing whisky in a variety of cask types.
In 2004, The Macallan introduced the Fine Oak series, expanding beyond exclusively sherry-cask maturation to include whisky matured in American bourbon oak casks as well as sherry ones; that series was renamed Triple Cask Matured in 2018. The Double Cask range, matured in a combination of American and European oak sherry-seasoned casks, sits alongside the original Sherry Oak line as one of the distillery's two core maturation philosophies today.
Why It Matters
The Macallan's insistence on cask-driven flavor, rather than age statement alone, changed how the wider Scotch industry talks about maturation. Its wood policy is often cited as the industry benchmark for sherry-cask whisky, and its older expressions, including the Macallan 25 Year Old and Macallan 30 Year Old Sherry Oak, are among the most sought-after collectible bottlings in the category. In 2024, Russell Anderson of The Macallan was inducted into the Whisky Magazine Hall of Fame, recognition of the distillery's continued influence on Scotch whisky craft. The Macallan 30 Year Old Double Cask, by contrast, shows the softer, sweeter register the Double Cask range is built for, with vanilla, orange, and toffee standing in for the older range's darker dried-fruit intensity.
Visiting the Distillery
The Macallan's visitor center, opened in 2018, includes tasting areas, a retail boutique, and fine dining at TimeSpirit. As of April 2026, general visitor experiences are bookable Thursday through Sunday, with private bespoke experiences available Monday through Wednesday. All visits are timed, reserved in advance, and restricted to guests 18 and older. The distillery sits in a rural stretch of Speyside with limited public transport, so arranging transfers ahead of a visit is strongly recommended.
