About The Sentinel

Where the whiskey flows, the spirit of the original Independence Sentinel newspaper lives on.

The Sentinel was the editor-in-chief of The Independence Sentinel newspaper. Sharp mind. Keen eye. A nose for the story — and for good bourbon. In the bustling newspaper era of the early 1900s, he was one of the most recognized figures in Independence, Missouri.

Every evening, after the final pages went to press, he'd pour a neat bourbon and settle into his corner of the building. That corner became known as The Sentinel Room.

Monocle. Mustache. A reputation for the finest whiskeys in town. The Sentinel wasn't just a newspaperman — he was a connoisseur. His standards shaped the room's collection. His taste set the bar.

Today, The Sentinel watches over the whiskey room in spirit. A bronze likeness — monocle and all — sits at the bar. The standards haven't changed. The collection has only grown.

The Discovery

The Sentinel's likeness was not designed in a boardroom or sketched on a napkin. He was discovered in the pages of the Independence Sentinel newspaper, dated April 15th, 1899.

The illustration appeared in an advertisement for Independence Steam Laundry — "Spick, Span and Slick... in faultless linen everyone should attire themselves at Eastertide." The image, copyrighted 1897, depicts a distinguished rabbit in monocle and formal attire, emerging from a collar box with unmistakable confidence.

He has watched over Independence for over 127 years.

Today, he watches over the whiskey room.
