Oban Distillery
Oban, Highland · international · Founded 1794
On Scotland's rugged west coast, where the town of Oban wraps around a harbor facing the Isle of Mull, one of the country's smallest working distilleries has been turning out single malt since before the town itself fully took shape around it. Oban Distillery predates most of the streets that now surround it, and its compact, almost cottage-scale footprint still reflects that origin.
History & Heritage
Oban Distillery was founded in 1794 by brothers John and Hugh Stevenson, and the operation stayed in Stevenson family hands for three generations before passing to Peter Cumstie in 1866. James Walter Higgin bought the distillery in 1883, and in 1898 it was acquired by Alexander Edward, who also owned Aultmore, forming the Oban & Aultmore-Glenlivet Company. Ownership shifted again in 1923 when the distillery was sold to the Oban Distillery Co., a subsidiary of John Dewar & Son, and just two years later, in 1925, Dewar & Sons was itself acquired by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL). Production halted from 1931 to 1937, part of the broader contraction across the Scotch industry during that period, and resumed in 1937. A second pause came in 1969, this time for construction of a new still house, with production resuming in 1972. Through DCL's later consolidation into United Distillers, Oban eventually folded into what is now Diageo, which owns the distillery today, as of July 2026. The distillery sits at Stafford Street in Oban, Argyll, tucked directly into the town rather than set apart on open land, a legacy of a distillery that grew up alongside its harbor town rather than the other way around.
The Whiskey
Oban operates with just two pot stills, making it one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, and it runs with a lean crew of only seven staff. Water is drawn from Loch Gleann a'Bhearraidh, three miles from the site. The malted barley is only lightly peated, landing at roughly 1-2 PPM phenol, a restrained smoke level compared to Oban's Highland and island neighbors. Fermentation runs long, around 120 hours, or four days, which builds out the fruity character that defines the house style. Distillation happens in small, lamp glass-shaped copper pot stills, and condensation runs through traditional worm tubs, a method only about twenty Scotch producers still use. Because those worm tubs sit exposed to Oban's salted sea air, they contribute a distinct maritime depth to the spirit. Most of the whisky matures in refill American oak ex-bourbon casks, while the Distiller's Edition receives a secondary finish in ex-Fino sherry casks. Annual capacity runs approximately 670,000 to 700,000 liters, modest by industry standards and consistent with the distillery's small physical scale. Core expressions include the Oban Single Malt 14 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky, part of Diageo's Classic Malts Selection, alongside the Distiller's Edition, the non-age-statement Little Bay, and limited releases including an 18 Year Old, a 32 Year Old bottled at roughly 6,000 bottles, and special releases such as the 2023 "Soul of Calypso," matured in Caribbean rum casks.
Why It Matters
Oban's combination of coastal fermentation character, light peat, and worm-tub depth has earned it sustained recognition. The 14 Year Old took a Gold Medal and 92 points from Tastings.com's International Review of Spirits in 2018 and a Double Gold at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Distiller's Edition has picked up Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2008, 2011, and 2020, plus International Wine and Spirit Competition Gold, Best in Class, in 2002 and 2010. Little Bay earned a Bronze Medal at the 2016 World Whisky Awards. That track record, built on a production process that has changed little since the still house rebuild of the early 1970s, is why Oban remains a benchmark reference point for what a small, traditionally run coastal Highland distillery can produce.
