Old Grand Dad

Clermont, Kentucky · national

In a world of marketing gimmicks and limited releases, Old Grand Dad stands as a testament to the power of consistency. For more than 140 years, this Kentucky bourbon has maintained the same high-rye recipe that made Basil Hayden Sr. a pioneer in the whiskey trade, proving that sometimes the old ways are the best ways.

History & Heritage

Raymond B. Hayden established Old Grand Dad in 1882, naming the bourbon after his grandfather, Meredith Basil Hayden Sr., whose portrait still graces every bottle. The elder Hayden had been distilling since 1840, pioneering the high-rye approach that would become the brand's signature. The original distillery rose at Hobbs Station in Bullitt County, though ownership passed through the Wathen family, National Distillers, and eventually to Beam Suntory, where it resides today at the Jim Beam distillery in Clermont.

The Whiskey

Old Grand Dad's defining characteristic remains its high-rye mash bill: 63% corn, 27% rye, and 10% malted barley. This generous rye content delivers the spicy backbone that sets it apart from sweeter bourbons. The lineup spans from the approachable 80-proof expression to the robust 114 Barrel Proof, with the 100-proof Bottled-in-Bond offering the sweet spot of power and balance. Recent limited releases like the 16 Year have earned double gold at major competitions, though the core expressions remain the workhorses.

Why It Matters

Old Grand Dad earned its place in The Sentinel Room's Reserve Whiskey Library not through flashy marketing but through decades of reliable quality. Its high-rye profile makes it a bartender's friend and a reliable choice for those who appreciate good whiskey. In an era when distilleries chase trends, Old Grand Dad proves that sticking to what works, that same recipe Basil Hayden perfected generations ago, creates something worth preserving.
