Mitchell & Sons
Dublin, Dublin · international
Mitchell & Son is not a distillery in the conventional sense. It is a Dublin wine and spirits merchant and whiskey bonder whose name sits on the label of one of Ireland's most celebrated whiskey families: the Spot Whiskeys. Green Spot, Yellow Spot, Red Spot, Blue Spot, and Gold Spot are single pot still Irish whiskeys produced specifically for Mitchell & Son by Irish Distillers at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork, a relationship that reaches back through more than a century of Dublin whiskey bonding tradition.
History & Heritage
Mitchell & Son expanded into the wine and spirit trade and commenced whiskey bonding in 1887, building on an already-established merchant business. As a bonder, the firm did not distill. It purchased new-make and maturing spirit in bulk directly from working distilleries and matured that spirit itself, under its own roof, on its own terms. Mitchell & Son historically bought distillate from Jameson's Bow Street Distillery and matured it in cellars under Fitzwilliam Lane in Dublin, using casks that had previously held the fortified wines the merchant imported and sold. That dual trade, wine importer and whiskey bonder operating out of the same premises, is what produced the Spot Whiskeys' signature: casks seasoned with sherry, Madeira, Marsala, and other fortified wines, laid down alongside American oak.
The turning point came in 1971, when Bow Street Distillery closed as Irish Distillers consolidated all production at Midleton. Rather than losing access to whiskey for its bonded stock, Mitchell & Son struck an agreement with Irish Distillers: Midleton would produce the spirit, and Mitchell & Son would retain sole rights to market, sell, and develop the Spot Whiskeys brand. That arrangement has held since. In 1988, the Spot Whiskeys brand became part of Pernod Ricard's portfolio through its ownership of Irish Distillers, meaning the whiskey itself is produced within a multinational spirits group's distillery while the brand and commercial rights remain with the Mitchell family, seventh generation, as of July 2026. Today Mitchell & Son operates retail wine and spirits shops in Dublin, including its main address at the CHQ Building in the IFSC Docklands and a second shop in Sandycove, County Dublin, with a further location planned at The Vaults on Harcourt Street that will include a dedicated area on the history of Spot whiskey.
The Whiskey
The name "Spot" comes directly from bonding practice: Mitchell & Son marked casks of differing ages with a daub, or spot, of colored paint, a code that survives today as the whiskeys' color-coded names. Blue Spot denotes 7 years of maturation, Green Spot 10 years, Yellow Spot 12 years, and Red Spot 15 years. Every expression is single pot still Irish whiskey, distilled from a mash of both malted and unmalted barley and triple distilled in traditional copper pot stills at Midleton, the production method that gives pot still whiskey its distinctive spice and body compared to single malt or grain whiskey.
Green Spot Pot Still Irish Whiskey is the flagship release, matured in a combination of American oak ex-bourbon casks and European oak ex-sherry casks. Red Spot 15YR Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey adds bourbon, sherry, and Marsala casks to the maturation, while Yellow Spot 12YR brings in Malaga wine casks and Blue Spot 7YR is bottled at cask strength with a Madeira finish. Gold Spot, released to mark 135 years of Mitchell & Son whiskey bonding, comes in 9-year and 13-year Generations Edition expressions finished across a range of wine casks. Limited single-cask collaborations, including Green Spot Château Léoville Barton finished in Bordeaux wine casks and Green Spot Château Montelena finished in French oak Zinfandel casks, extend the wine-cask philosophy that has defined the house style since Mitchell & Son's bonding cellars operated under the Dublin streets.
Why It Matters
The Spot Whiskeys occupy a rare position in Irish whiskey: a brand controlled by an independent family merchant but produced inside one of the industry's largest distilling operations. Whiskey writer Jim Murray has called Green Spot unquestionably one of the world's greatest whiskies, and the line continues to earn recognition at international competitions, including a Silver Medal at the IWSC Spirit Awards. For those who appreciate good whiskey, the Spot Whiskeys are a study in how cask selection and wine-merchant instincts, rather than distillation itself, can define a whiskey's identity. Mitchell & Son is widely cited as Ireland's oldest independent drinks merchant, a claim built on a continuous run of wine importing and whiskey bonding that predates the modern Irish whiskey revival by well over a century.
The Sentinel Room's Reserve Whiskey Library carries five expressions from Mitchell & Son, including Green Spot Pot Still Irish Whiskey and Red Spot 15YR Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, offering a direct line into this bonding tradition without a trip to Dublin.
