Bowmore Distillery
Bowmore, Islay · international · Founded 1779
Bowmore Distillery sits on the shore of Loch Indaal in the village of Bowmore on the Isle of Islay, Scotland, and holds the distinction of being the oldest licensed whisky distillery on the island and one of the oldest in all of Scotland. Its whisky carries the maritime, smoky signature that defines Islay single malt, shaped by a site the distillery has occupied continuously since the eighteenth century.
History & Heritage
Bowmore was founded in 1779 by John P. Simson (recorded in some sources as John or David Simpson), making it the first legal distillery established in the village that shares its name. Ownership changed hands several times over the following two centuries. James and William Mutter acquired the distillery in 1837 and expanded its reach into export markets. The Mutter family sold the business in 1892, when it became the Bowmore Distillery Company. Sherriff's Bowmore Distillery Ltd. took over in 1925, followed by William Grigor & Son Ltd. in 1950.
A pivotal change came in 1963, when Stanley P. Morrison acquired the distillery, forming Morrison's Bowmore Distillery, Ltd. and setting the company on a path toward its current ownership. Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan first invested in 1989, buying a 35 percent stake in Morrison Bowmore. Suntory acquired full ownership of Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd. in 1994. Two decades later, in 2014, Suntory's acquisition of Jim Beam created Beam Suntory, the company that owns, as of July 2026, Bowmore Distillery today.
During the Second World War, production at Bowmore halted entirely and the site was requisitioned by RAF Coastal Command, which used it as a base for anti-submarine warfare missions along the western approaches to Scotland.
The Whiskey
Bowmore is one of the few Scottish distilleries that still malts a portion of its own barley on traditional malting floors, where it is turned by hand. This self-malted barley accounts for roughly 30 to 40 percent of what the distillery uses; the rest is sourced maltedn elsewhere. The barley is dried over peat fires, which gives Bowmore its signature smoky character, with phenol levels typically running between 18 and 30 parts per million, a moderate peating level compared to some of its Islay neighbors.
Water for production is drawn from the River Laggan, and fermentation takes place in traditional washbacks made of Oregon pine. Distillation runs through four copper pot stills: two wash stills at 30,940 liters each and two spirit stills at 14,750 liters each, all with tall, slender necks and a distinctive "onion" shape that shapes the character of the spirit through double distillation.
Maturation happens in a mix of ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads and ex-sherry European oak butts, aged in dunnage warehouses along the loch. The most storied of these is the No. 1 Vaults, a warehouse partly below sea level where the proximity to the water is credited with contributing the maritime, brine-touched notes found across Bowmore's range. The distillery's annual production capacity runs to approximately two million liters of alcohol, and in an unusual bit of local infrastructure, waste heat recovered from distillation is piped to heat a nearby public swimming pool used by the village.
Why It Matters
Bowmore's combination of floor-malted barley, moderate peating, sherry-cask maturation, and the singular conditions of the No. 1 Vaults produce a house style that stands apart from the heavier peat of some other Islay producers while still delivering unmistakable smoke and salt. The distillery's age and continuous operation since 1779 make it a foundational reference point for Islay whisky as a category, and its Black Bowmore series remains among the most sought-after and collectible releases in the world of Scotch whisky. The Sentinel Room's Reserve Whiskey Library carries Bowmore 12 Year Single Malt Scotch and Bowmore 15 Year Single Malt Scotch, both core expressions that showcase the distillery's balance of smoke, fruit, and sherry-cask depth for those who appreciate good whiskey.
Visiting the Distillery
Bowmore's visitor centre and whisky bar are open Monday through Saturday, with the Bowmore Whisky Bar operating from 11 am to 4:30 pm. Guided experiences, including the Signature cask tasting tour, are available with advance booking recommended, particularly for groups. The visitor centre includes stairs, and some production areas have uneven surfaces and steps, so guests with access needs are encouraged to contact the distillery directly before visiting. Dogs are welcome in the visitor centre, shop, and bar, though not in production areas. Distillery production is scheduled to pause for maintenance for the remainder of 2026, but the visitor centre, tastings, and tours will continue to operate throughout.
