Glendronach Distillery

Forgue, Highland · international · Founded 1826

In the Highland hills near Forgue, by Huntly, Aberdeenshire, Glendronach Distillery has spent two centuries making one of Scotland's most distinctively sherried single malts, matured almost exclusively in Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks sourced from Andalucia.

History & Heritage

Glendronach was founded in 1826 by James Allardice (also recorded as Allardes) alongside a consortium of local farmers, making it one of the older working distilleries in the Highland whisky district. Ownership passed through a long line of Scotch whisky's major names over the following century and a half: Walter Scott took over in 1852, John Somerville & Co. acquired it in 1887, and Captain Charles Grant bought the distillery in 1920. William Teacher & Sons purchased Glendronach in 1960, and the distillery came under Allied Distillers, later Allied Domecq, in 1976.

Glendronach was mothballed in 1996 and sat silent until Allied Domecq reopened it in 2002. In 2005, it passed to Chivas Brothers Ltd, part of the Pernod Ricard group, before being sold to The BenRiach Distillery Company in 2008. The distillery is owned, as of July 2026, by the Brown-Forman Corporation, which acquired Glendronach together with the BenRiach and Glenglassaugh distilleries in April 2016.

The Whiskey

Glendronach draws its soft Highland water from underwater springs on the Dronac burn within the distillery grounds. Scottish malted barley is milled in a traditional Porteus malt mill; floor maltings operated on site until they ceased in 1996. Mashing uses a 3.7-tonne cast-iron rake-and-plough mash tun running a three-water regime, and fermentation takes place in nine wooden washbacks made of Scottish larch, running between 60 and 90 hours.

Distillation runs through four pot stills: two wash stills of roughly 13,635 liters and two spirit stills of roughly 6,800 liters. The stills are saxophone-shaped with boil balls (reflux ogees) and downward-facing lyne arms, a configuration that produces a robust, rich, and complex new make spirit. Glendronach was one of the last Scottish distilleries to convert its stills from direct coal-firing to steam heating, a switch it made in 2005.

What sets Glendronach apart is maturation. The spirit rests almost entirely in Spanish sherry casks, predominantly Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez, sourced from Andalucia and aged in traditional earthen-floored dunnage warehouses. Every expression is bottled without chill filtration and with natural color, a policy that preserves the depth and richness the sherry wood imparts. The Reserve Whiskey Library at The Sentinel Room carries Glendronach 12 Year Old Scotch Whisky, matured in a combination of Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, and Glendronach 15 Year Revival Single Malt Scotch Whisky, matured in the same pairing of cask types for a longer, deeper expression.

Why It Matters

Glendronach's commitment to full sherry cask maturation, rather than the more common practice of finishing bourbon-matured whisky in sherry casks for the final months, is a defining stylistic choice that produces some of the richest, most fruit-driven single malts in the Highland category. That approach has earned consistent recognition: Glendronach 12 Year Old Scotch Whisky won Gold Medals at the 2016 and 2017 World Whiskies Awards and the 2017 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, and a Silver Medal at the 2019 World Whiskies Awards under the Original Aged 12 Years label. The Glendronach 15 Year Revival Single Malt Scotch Whisky has been especially decorated, taking a Silver Medal at the 2009 Malt Maniacs Award, Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2018, 2024, and 2025, and Best In Show Whiskey honors at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. For those who appreciate good whiskey with a rich, sherried character, Glendronach represents one of the Highland region's most consistent and decorated producers.
