Angel's Envy Distillery
Louisville, Kentucky · national · Founded 2010
Angel's Envy built its reputation on a simple, exacting idea: finish already-excellent Kentucky whiskey in a second barrel and let that barrel do the work most distillers leave to chance. The result is a bourbon aged briefly in ruby port wine casks and a rye rested for months in Caribbean rum barrels, both made at a working distillery on Louisville's Whiskey Row.
History & Heritage
Angel's Envy traces back to Lincoln Henderson, a Bourbon Hall of Fame master distiller who spent four decades at Brown-Forman before retiring in the early 2000s. In 2006 Henderson began developing his own whiskey project independently, and in 2010 he formalized that idea into a company with his son, Wes Henderson, naming it Angel's Envy after the portion of whiskey lost to evaporation during barrel aging, the "angel's share." The brand's first bourbon released in 2011.
Angel's Envy operated initially as a finishing house, sourcing Kentucky straight bourbon and rye and applying its own secondary-barrel program rather than distilling from scratch. That changed in 2016, when the company opened its own working distillery and visitor center at 500 E. Main Street in downtown Louisville. Bacardi Limited had acquired Angel's Share Brands, the company behind Angel's Envy and its Louisville Distilling Co. LLC operation, the year before, in 2015. As of July 2026, Angel's Envy is owned by Bacardi Limited and operated under the legal entity Louisville Distilling Co. LLC, with the consumer-facing brand still built around the Henderson family's finishing philosophy. Owen Martin was appointed Master Distiller in the fall of 2022, continuing that lineage.
The Whiskey
Angel's Envy's identity is barrel finishing. The flagship Angel's Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Port Wine Barrels starts as Kentucky straight bourbon built on a mash bill of 72 percent corn, 18 percent rye, and 10 percent malted barley, then spends a final 3 to 6 months in 60-gallon ruby port wine barrels, which add dried fruit and dark sugar notes on top of the base bourbon's oak and vanilla.
The Angel's Envy Rye Whiskey Rum Cask Finished follows the same logic in a different direction. Distilled from a rye-heavy mash of roughly 95 percent rye and 5 percent malted barley, it finishes for up to 18 months in Caribbean rum casks, a longer finishing window than the bourbon that pushes the whiskey toward a notably sweet, molasses-forward profile.
Angel's Envy Triple Oak Bourbon, built on the same base bourbon mash bill, took the finishing concept further still, aging in a sequence of Hungarian oak, Chinkapin oak, and French oak barrels before its national release as a permanent expression in 2024. In 2026 the distillery released its first age-stated rye, the Angel's Envy 10 Cask Strength Rye Finished in Caribbean Rum Casks, aged a combined 10 years including up to 4 years in rum casks, a milestone that signals the distillery's growing supply of fully in-house-aged stock. Angel's Envy began as a sourcing-and-finishing operation, and while its Louisville distillery now produces its own spirit, some components or releases may still include sourced whiskey; not every expression should be assumed to be entirely distilled on-site unless a specific release says so.
Why It Matters
Angel's Envy proved that secondary finishing could be a distillery's entire identity rather than a limited-release gimmick, and its port-finished bourbon helped popularize wine-cask finishing across the American whiskey category. The brand also backs that identity with an environmental commitment: its Toast the Trees program, run in partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, has planted more than 200,000 trees since 2014 to support a sustainable supply of the oak barrels its finishing program depends on.
