King Car Kavalan Distillery

In the subtropical mountains of Taiwan, King Car Kavalan Distillery has rewritten the rules of whisky making. Since releasing its first expression in 2008, this young distillery has collected over 950 international gold medals and proven that exceptional single malt can emerge from the most unlikely places.

History & Heritage

Mr. Tien-Tsai Lee founded Kavalan in 2005 following Taiwan's alcohol market liberalization, naming the distillery after the indigenous Kavalan people of Yilan County. With guidance from Dr. Jim Swan, the renowned whisky consultant, Kavalan distilled its first spirit in March 2006. The distillery released Kavalan Classic in December 2008, marking Taiwan's entry into the world whisky conversation.

The Whiskey

Kavalan produces single malt whisky using traditional Scottish copper pot stills and double distillation. European malted barley meets mineral-rich meltwater from Snow Mountain in Yilan's intense subtropical climate. The distillery employs diverse cask types including ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, ex-port, and ex-wine barrels, plus their proprietary S.T.R. process for rejuvenating wine barrels. Notable expressions include the foundational Kavalan Classic, the premium King Car Conductor, and the acclaimed Solist series featuring cask-strength whiskies.

Why It Matters

Kavalan earned recognition as "World's Best Single Malt Whisky" in 2015 and has claimed "Distiller of the Year" honors multiple times across major competitions. The subtropical climate accelerates maturation, developing complex tropical fruit profiles in timeframes that challenge traditional aging wisdom. This pioneering distillery demonstrates that geography need not limit greatness, earning its place among the world's respected single malt producers.
