J.T.S Brown
regional · Founded 1855
In the years before the Civil War, a Louisville wholesale liquor man named John Thompson Street Brown built a business that would outlast his own family's control of it by more than a century. Today, the J.T.S. Brown name lives on as a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey brand owned, as of July 2026, by Heaven Hill Brands, distilled at Heaven Hill's Bernheim Distillery in Louisville and bottled at the company's facility in Bardstown.
History & Heritage
John Thompson Street Brown, Sr. entered the wholesale liquor trade in Louisville around 1852 and gained sole ownership of that business by 1857. The J.T.S. Brown brand itself began production in 1855, named directly for its founder. In 1863, Brown's half-brother, George Garvin Brown, joined the firm, and the operation was rebranded J.T.S. Brown and Brother. That partnership dissolved in 1874, at which point J.T.S. Brown reorganized the company as J.T.S. Brown and Sons, bringing his own sons into the business. Notably, George Garvin Brown went on to found what became Brown-Forman, making the J.T.S. Brown lineage a direct branch of one of Kentucky's most consequential whiskey family trees, even though the two businesses split for good in the 1870s.
Under J.T.S. Brown and Sons, the family expanded by acquiring the McBrayer Distillery in Lawrenceburg, in Anderson County, Kentucky. Like every American whiskey producer, the business shut down during Prohibition. It was revived afterward by Creel Brown Jr., a descendant of the founding family, who brought the name back to market. The brand changed hands in 1955, and ownership eventually transferred to Heaven Hill Distilleries, where it has remained as part of that company's deep bench of historic Kentucky bourbon names.
The Whiskey
J.T.S. Brown bourbon is distilled today at Heaven Hill's Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky (DSP-KY-1), then aged and bottled at Heaven Hill's Bardstown, Kentucky facility (DSP-KY-31). The mash bill runs 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley, a recipe shared across much of Heaven Hill's bourbon lineup.
The Reserve Whiskey Library carries J.T.S. Brown Bourbon, the brand's standard expression, typically bottled at 80 proof. The brand's other notable expression is J.T.S. Brown Bottled-in-Bond Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV) and aged a minimum of four years in new charred oak barrels. To carry the Bottled-in-Bond designation, a whiskey must meet federal standards set under the Bottled-in-Bond Act: it must be the product of a single distilling season from one distillery, aged at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. government supervision, and bottled at precisely 100 proof without additives or blending. That designation makes the Bottled-in-Bond expression a useful benchmark pour for evaluating Heaven Hill's house style without the influence of proof dilution or blending across distilling seasons.
Why It Matters
J.T.S. Brown occupies a particular niche in American whiskey history: a brand old enough to predate the Civil War, tied by blood to the founder of Brown-Forman, and now folded into Heaven Hill's portfolio as one of the more affordable, high-proof entries in the category. For those who appreciate good whiskey and want to taste Kentucky's 19th-century wholesale-liquor era in a glass, the Bottled-in-Bond expression in particular delivers a straightforward, high-proof read on Heaven Hill's standard bourbon mash bill without the premium pricing of the company's more marketed labels.
Visiting the Distillery
There is no dedicated J.T.S. Brown visitor experience, but the brand is part of the Heaven Hill portfolio, and Heaven Hill operates the Heaven Hill Bourbon Experience visitor center in Bardstown, Kentucky. The center offers tours and guided tastings covering the history and production of Heaven Hill's full lineup of American whiskeys, including brands like J.T.S. Brown that don't have standalone tour programs of their own.
