J.T.S Brown
When a bourbon survives nearly 170 years and earns a place in American literature, it deserves attention. J.T.S. Brown represents something increasingly rare: an old-line Kentucky bourbon that maintains traditional standards without fanfare or marketing gimmicks.
History & Heritage
John Thompson Street Brown Jr. established his wholesale liquor business in Louisville in 1857, two years after the brand's founding in 1855. His partnership with half-brother George Garvin Brown, who later founded Brown-Forman, cemented the family's place in Kentucky whiskey history. The enterprise expanded into distilling through the acquisition of McBrayer Distillery in Lawrenceburg, surviving Prohibition and eventually finding its home at Heaven Hill Distillery.
The Whiskey
Today's J.T.S. Brown bottlings are distilled at Heaven Hill's Bernheim facility in Louisville, then aged and bottled in Bardstown. The flagship Bottled-in-Bond offering follows the 1897 Act's strict requirements: single distillery, single season production, four years minimum aging, and 100 proof bottling with no additives. Heaven Hill's low-rye mash bill of 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malted barley produces a milder, smooth bourbon with delicate aromatics. An 80-proof version rounds out the lineup.
Why It Matters
J.T.S. Brown proves that quality bourbon need not carry a premium price. Its Bottled-in-Bond credentials ensure traditional production standards, while its literary pedigree as Fast Eddie Felson's whiskey of choice in "The Hustler" adds cultural weight. For those who appreciate honest bourbon without pretense, J.T.S. Brown delivers consistent Kentucky character that has endured across three centuries.
