Isle of Arran Distillery

Lochranza, Isle of Arran · international

When Isle of Arran Distillery opened at Lochranza in 1995, it ended nearly 160 years without legal whisky production on the island. Now operating two distilleries on opposite ends of Arran, this award-winning operation has built its reputation on an uncompromising commitment to natural whisky-making.

History & Heritage

Founded in 1995 at the northern tip of the Isle of Arran, the Lochranza distillery marked the return of legal whisky production to this Scottish island. The operation has since expanded with a second distillery at Lagg on the island's southern end. The distillery draws its water from Loch Na Davie in the hills above Lochranza, where Scottish rainwater cascades down six waterfalls through the Easan Biorach burn, each step further purifying what becomes the foundation of their whisky.

The Whiskey

Arran produces single malt Scotch whisky using traditional methods with modern precision. Barley arrives from mainland maltsters as whole grain, then gets milled on-site at Lochranza. The distillery refuses to add caramel coloring or employ chill filtration, allowing each expression to retain its natural character and full flavor profile. Their Quarter Cask 'The Bothy' showcases this philosophy with notes of apple tart, pineapple, and brioche. The spirit matures in warehouses on Arran, where the island's climate and quality casks shape each expression.

Why It Matters

Isle of Arran represents modern Scottish whisky-making at its purest. Their commitment to natural production methods, combined with the unique terroir of island maturation, produces expressions that speak honestly of their origins. For those who appreciate good whisky, Arran offers a transparent window into how water, grain, and time create something greater than the sum of their parts.
