15 Stars Fine Aged Bourbon

Father-and-son team Rick Johnson and Ricky Johnson built 15 STARS around a simple wager: that patient blending and unusually high ages could make a young brand taste like an old one. Founded in 2019 and reaching market in 2022, the Kentucky-based bourbon house has since collected more than 200 competition awards, including 33 Best in Category finishes, on a portfolio built mostly from sourced whiskey aged well beyond typical release age.

History & Heritage

15 STARS began as a father-and-son project between Rick Johnson and his son Ricky Johnson, who founded the brand in 2019 under the family's Johnson Ventures umbrella. The Johnsons were not new to agriculture or consumer products: the same family runs Black Jewell Popcorn, a gourmet specialty popcorn business, and it is that farming operation that grows the proprietary red, white, blue, and black heirloom corn varieties now used in 15 STARS' bourbon. The first 15 STARS whiskeys reached the market in 2022, built initially on sourced barrels rather than the family's own distillate.

15 STARS blends and bottles its bourbon in Bardstown, Kentucky, and produces its own-make whiskey through a contract distilling program at Bardstown Bourbon Co. rather than operating a company-owned distillery. This arrangement lets the Johnsons control mash bill and corn variety without the capital burden of building stills, a common structure among newer American whiskey brands competing on liquid quality rather than physical plant. In May 2026, that own-make program reached a milestone: 15 STARS released First West Explorer, the fourth expression in its First West collection and the brand's first bourbon made entirely from 100 percent in-house distilled whiskey, built on a proprietary baby black corn mashbill. Today the company's holdings span three brands: 15 STARS, First West, and Kentucke County.

The Whiskey

15 STARS' catalog splits between two working methods. Its earlier and still-prominent releases are blends of sourced Kentucky straight bourbon, in some cases combined with whiskey distilled in Indiana and Tennessee, with mash bills the brand does not disclose. Its newer releases increasingly fold in bourbon distilled from the family's heirloom corn under the Bardstown Bourbon Co. contract program. The brand markets a practice it calls "flavor proofing," bottling each release at whatever proof the blending team judges best for drinking neat rather than a fixed house proof.

The First West line anchors the current portfolio. First West Bourbon blends straight bourbons aged 15, 9, and 7 years from Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, bottled at 106 proof. First West Small Batch blends 5-, 6-, and 7-year bourbons, including the brand's own red, white, and blue corn distillate, in batches capped at 25 barrels and bottled at 102 proof. First West Toasted Oak Finish takes the same young blend through a secondary finish in barrels toasted to two different profiles, landing at 98 proof. First West Extra Aged pushes older, blending 8- and 9-year Kentucky straight bourbon and flavor-proofing to 100 proof. Above the First West line, 15 STARS Private Stock 8 & 15 Year Blended Bourbon combines 8- and 15-year Kentucky straight bourbons in a limited release bottled at 107 proof (53.5% ABV). An earlier high-age release, Timeless Reserve, blended Kentucky straight bourbons aged at least 14 years from two different mash bills at 103 proof.

Why It Matters

15 STARS has built its reputation on outsized age statements for a young company, using both sourcing relationships and its own contract-distilled stock to put 8-, 9-, and 15-year whiskey on shelves faster than a from-scratch distillery could. That strategy has drawn consistent recognition: First West Extra Aged earned a Double Gold and 97 points at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, a 95-point IWSC Spirits Award, and a John Barleycorn Gold in 2025; 8 & 15 Year Private Stock took John Barleycorn Gold and Double Gold honors in 2024 alongside ASCOT and L.A. Spirits Awards Platinum; and the original First West Bourbon won Best of Class and Double Gold at the 2022 New York World Spirits Competition.
