Blue Run Spirits

Georgetown, Kentucky · national · Founded 2020

Blue Run Spirits built its name on a simple bet: that careful blending and barrel selection, not a brand's own stillhouse, could produce Kentucky Straight Bourbon and rye worth seeking out. Founded in Georgetown, Kentucky, in 2020, the brand has since become one of the more decorated non-distiller producers in the category, and as of July 2026 it operates as part of Molson Coors Beverage Company.

History & Heritage

Blue Run Spirits was founded in 2020 by Mike Montgomery, Tim Sparapani, Jesse McKnight, Andy Brown, and Devon McKinney, who also designed the brand's butterfly medallion. From the start, Blue Run positioned itself as a whiskey company built around blending expertise and barrel selection rather than distilling capacity of its own, contracting production to established Kentucky distillers, primarily Castle & Key Distillery.

On August 8, 2023, Molson Coors Beverage Company acquired Blue Run Spirits, its first spirits acquisition and the deal that launched Coors Spirits Co., the brewing giant's push beyond beer. Blue Run is owned, as of July 2026, by Molson Coors Beverage Company, with the founding team remaining involved in the brand's whiskey program. At the time of the acquisition, Blue Run had also announced plans for a 35,000-square-foot distillery and 20,000-square-foot warehouse with a visitor's center in Georgetown, targeted for completion by 2025; the current construction status of that project has not been confirmed.

The Whiskey

Blue Run's core lineup runs through two families: bourbon and rye. Blue Run High Rye Bourbon, a 111-proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon, is contract distilled for the brand at Castle & Key. Reflection I Bourbon (95 proof) and Reflection II Bourbon (100 proof) round out the core bourbon range, with Reflection II blended from an inventory of more than 5,000 barrels to emphasize brighter middle-note character. On the rye side, Emerald Rye is a barrel-proof release, 116.7 proof, crafted from 189 barrels contract distilled at Castle & Key by Blue Run Liquid Advisor Jim Rutledge and blended from three distinct rye mash bills, with some barrels aged in locations more than 50 miles apart in Bardstown and Frankfort. Shaylyn Gammon serves as Blue Run's Head of Whiskey and Master Blender, overseeing both the core range and the brand's CHOSEN private barrel program, which offers single barrel selections and micro-blends to retail and hospitality partners.

Why It Matters

Blue Run has built a reputation for quality without ever operating a still of its own, a model that draws real scrutiny in a category that prizes provenance. The brand has answered that scrutiny with results: Emerald Rye and High Rye Bourbon have each taken Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Reflection II Bourbon earned a 95-point Gold from the International Wine & Spirits Competition, and multiple expressions have taken Platinum and Double Platinum honors at the ASCOT Awards. For those who appreciate good whiskey, Blue Run is a useful case study in what disciplined sourcing and blending can achieve, and its acquisition by Molson Coors signals how seriously major beverage companies now take the craft whiskey category.
