Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company
Louisville, Kentucky · national · Founded 1889
Few American whiskey stories run through a single family the way Kentucky Peerless does. The brand that Henry Kraver built into one of Kentucky's larger pre-Prohibition producers sat dormant for nearly a century until his great-grandson brought it back to life in downtown Louisville, reclaiming the original distilled spirits plant number, DSP-KY-50, and an uncompromising set of production rules: sweet mash fermentation, low barrel entry proof, no chill filtration, and bottling at barrel proof. The result is one of the most credible grain-to-bottle operations in modern craft whiskey.
History & Heritage
The first Peerless whiskey went into barrel in 1881 at the E.W. Worsham & Co. distillery in Henderson, Kentucky. Henry H. Kraver, who had arrived in Henderson in 1885 at age 26, acquired the operation in 1889 and incorporated it as The Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company in 1907. At its peak the distillery filled around 200 barrels a week, more than 23,000 a year, before the wartime Lever Food and Fuel Act halted production in 1917, three years ahead of Prohibition itself. Peerless whiskey remained available by medicinal prescription from 1921 to 1923, and then the brand went quiet.
It stayed quiet until Corky Taylor, Kraver's great-grandson and a retired financial services executive, revived the family name with his son Carson Taylor, the fifth generation. They built a new distillery at 120 North 10th Street in downtown Louisville and filled Barrel No. 1 on March 4, 2015, the first Peerless production since 1917. The first modern release, Peerless Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey, arrived in May 2017. The first bourbon in 102 years followed on June 22, 2019, and sold out the day it was released. Corky Taylor was inducted into the Kentucky Bourbon Hall of Fame in 2024, and in April 2026, ten years after Barrel No. 1, the distillery released its first 10 year old whiskey, Henry Kraver's Old Reserve Bourbon, planned as an annual release on Kraver's birthday.
The Whiskey
Everything happens under one roof: Peerless grains are milled, cooked, fermented, distilled, and barreled on site. The house style is defined by choices most producers avoid. Fermentation uses a sweet mash rather than sour mash, meaning no backset from a previous distillation is carried forward, a method that is harder to control but gives the distiller a clean start with every batch. Whiskey enters the barrel at a low 107 proof, is never chill filtered, and is bottled at barrel proof.
That discipline showed early. Whisky Advocate named the two-year-old Peerless Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey number 15 on its Top 20 Whiskies of 2017, the only craft producer on that year's list, and returned in 2021 to place Peerless Double Oak Bourbon at number 8. The Sentinel Room's Reserve Whiskey Library holds four Peerless expressions: Peerless Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, Peerless Toasted Bourbon, Peerless Bourbon Rum Barrel Finished, and Peerless Double Oaked Rye Whiskey.
Why It Matters
Plenty of young distilleries lean on a borrowed heritage story. Peerless actually owns its history, and more importantly, it backs the story with process. Sweet mash, 107 entry proof, barrel proof bottling, and no chill filtration are expensive, low-yield decisions made purely for flavor. For those who appreciate good whiskey, Peerless offers a rare chance to taste what a revived pre-Prohibition name can be when the family behind it refuses shortcuts, which is exactly why it earns its place in the Reserve Whiskey Library at The Sentinel Room.
