RY3 Whiskey

Louisville, Kentucky · national

RY3 Whiskey emerged from Virginia Beach in 2020 with a mathematical precision that sets it apart in American whiskey. The brand operates on what they call the "Rule of 3," blending three distinct whiskeys from three different mash bills, aged for three separate periods. This methodical approach, guided by Master Blender Matt Witzig, produces rye whiskeys that challenge conventional expectations.

History & Heritage

Phenomenal Spirits launched RY3 in August 2020, building on their success with Ron Izalco rums. The Virginia Beach-based blending house recruited Matt Witzig, formerly of Jos. A. Magnus & Co., to oversee the whiskey program. Within three years, RY3 expressions were collecting gold medals at major spirits competitions, including the New Orleans Bourbon Festival and ASCOT Awards.

The Whiskey

RY3 blends American and Canadian rye whiskeys, often incorporating light whiskey into the mix. A typical expression might combine 14-year light whiskey, 4-year 100% rye, and 3.5-year high-rye whiskey at 95% rye, 5% malted barley. The real distinction comes in finishing: vintage rum casks, Madeira wine barrels, Naranja orange wine casks, and French oak staves. The Cask Strength Cigar Series adds another layer of complexity through extended aging with French oak.

Why It Matters

RY3 represents the modern American blending house at its most ambitious. Their systematic approach to blending, combined with adventurous cask finishing, produces whiskeys that reward careful attention. The Toasted Barrel expression's 90-point IWSC score and multiple gold medals confirm that innovation and tradition can coexist in the same glass. For those who appreciate good whiskey, RY3 offers proof that Virginia Beach can compete with Kentucky's finest.
