Phenomenal Spirits, Inc.

Phenomenal Spirits, Inc. is not a distillery, and it does not pretend to be one. It is a brand owner and blending house founded by a technology entrepreneur who decided the most honest thing a new American whiskey company could do was skip the invented heritage story and compete on the blend itself. The company says as much on its own site: no pirate mascot, no bootlegger stories. Its flagship RY3 Whiskey line, a series of three-part rye blends dressed in unusual cask finishes, has become one of the more distinctive sourced-whiskey programs on the shelf.

History & Heritage

Karthik Sudhir, a technology and spirits entrepreneur, founded Phenomenal Spirits in 2017. The company is headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where it operates its own blending facility. Its first releases were Ron Izalco 10 Year, an aged Central American rum launched in the United States in August 2020, and Ron Izalco 15 Year Cask Strength that October, followed in December by RY3 Whiskey. The whiskey program was developed with Matt Witzig, the co-founder and former master blender of Joseph Magnus, one of the most respected blending operations of the early bourbon boom. Phenomenal Spirits is a non-distiller producer: it sources mature whiskey from established distilleries in the United States and Canada, then handles the cask finishing, aging, blending, and bottling in-house. Growth has been steady rather than splashy; by late 2024 the company's brands had reached 20 US states and 11 international markets.

The Whiskey

The RY3 name describes the recipe. Each release blends three whiskeys, three mash bills, and three age statements: a 95 percent rye from MGP in Indiana, a 100 percent rye from Alberta Distillers in Canada, and an aged American light whiskey, distilled primarily from corn and matured in used, uncharred barrels, that softens the rye spice and brightens the blend. That base then goes into a finishing program that is the brand's real signature. RY3 Whiskey Rum Cask Finish, the 100 proof flagship, rests in vintage rum casks. RY3 Whiskey Madeira Cask Finish and RY3 Whiskey Toasted Barrel Finish Cask Strength push the same blend in fortified-wine and toasted-oak directions. RY3 Whiskey Cigar Series Cask Strength goes further still, marrying rum, Madeira, and Naranja cask finished whiskeys with additional French oak. The company has also released long-aged cask strength single barrel light whiskeys and a straight rye under the RY3 mark.

Why It Matters

Blended rye is easy to do cheaply and hard to do well, and RY3 sits firmly in the second camp. The light whiskey component is a genuinely uncommon move, a category most producers ignore, used here as a deliberate structural tool rather than filler.
