Hard Truth Distilling Co.
Nashville, Indiana · national · Founded 2015
Deep in Brown County, Indiana, on a 325-acre wooded campus, Hard Truth Distilling Co. built a grain-to-glass whiskey program from a nine-year runway most brands never get. Every bottle in the lineup is distilled, aged, and bottled on-site, and the distillery has become one of the most decorated young whiskey producers in the country, earning Indiana Distillery of the Year honors and a run of gold medals at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
History & Heritage
Hard Truth's roots trace back to 2008, when founders Ed Ryan, Jeff McCabe, and Tim O'Bryan bought a foreclosed building in Nashville, Indiana, and opened Big Woods Brewing Co. the following year. A second brewing venture, Quaff ON! Brewing Co., followed in 2012, giving the founders a hospitality and production base before they turned to spirits. Distilling began in a small operation in 2015. Construction on the current 325-acre distillery campus started in 2017, and Hard Truth moved into its state-of-the-art facility in 2018. The company operates today, as of July 2026, as part of BWQOHT, Inc., the parent that also holds Big Woods Restaurants and Quaff ON! Brewing Co. Jeff McCabe serves as Executive Chairman of BWQOHT, Ed Ryan as co-founder and CEO of the distilling arm, with Bryan Smith as Master Distiller and partner alongside Jim Dunbar and Tim O'Bryan.
The Whiskey
Hard Truth uses a sweet mash process, meaning every batch starts from entirely fresh ingredients rather than backset carried over from a prior run, distilled on Vendome Copper & Brass Works column and pot stills. Most of the corn and wheat, and a majority of the rye, come from Indiana family farmers. Barrels are custom made with specific toast and char profiles, using staves dried 18 to 24 months, well beyond the industry-typical three to six. The distillery's first fully grain-to-glass release, Hard Truth Sweet Mash Rye, arrived in November 2021 after years of aging stock accumulated since 2015. Its first bourbons followed in 2024: Hard Truth Sweet Mash Bourbon (73% corn, 19% rye, 8% malted barley), the bottled-in-bond Hard Truth Wheated Bourbon (69% corn, 19% wheat, 12% malted barley), and the bottled-in-bond Hard Truth Four Grain Bourbon. The rye program has become the house specialty, built around a family of sweet mash mash bills. Hard Truth Double Oaked Sweet Mash Rye starts from a 94% rye, 6% malted barley bill, ages 2+ years, then is blended and re-finished in a second set of new charred American white oak barrels for another 3+ years. Hard Truth French Oak Harvest Rye, the third release in a four-part collaboration with Mellencamp Whiskey Company, runs 72% rye and 28% corn and finishes in new charred French oak. The Hard Truth Master Distiller's Reserve 2024 Blend marries three award-winning sweet mash rye mash bills, weighted 50% Caramel Malt Rye, 30% Malted Rye, and 20% Chocolate Malt Rye. To keep pace with demand, Hard Truth expanded rackhouse capacity from 4,000 to 12,000 barrels, moved to 24/7 production, and added three 5,000-gallon fermenters alongside its existing 2,500-gallon tanks, lifting production rate more than 800 percent.
Why It Matters
For a distillery that only released its first fully self-produced whiskey in 2021, Hard Truth's award record is unusual. Robb Report named its Straight Bourbon Whiskey one of the 50 Greatest Bourbons of the 21st Century in 2024. The New York International Spirits Competition named Hard Truth its 2024 Indiana Distillery of the Year. At the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Hard Truth Sweet Mash Bourbon, High Road Rye, and Sweet Mash Rye each took Gold, while the Double Oaked Sweet Mash Single Barrel Rye earned Double Gold. Whisky Advocate has scored three of its rye expressions at 93 points and gave the Master Distiller's Reserve its Editor's Choice. The distillery's rye family, in particular the chocolate malt, caramel malt, and malted rye variants, has repeatedly taken Double Platinum honors at the ASCOT Awards.
