Tamnavulin Distillery

Tomnavoulin, Speyside · international · Founded 1966

On the banks of the River Livet in the heart of Speyside sits Tamnavulin Distillery, a producer whose name comes from the Gaelic for "mill on the hill." Founded in 1966, it has spent six decades quietly building a reputation for something most Speyside houses treat as an afterthought: cask finishing as a genuine point of style, not a marketing gimmick.

History & Heritage

Tamnavulin Distillery was established in 1966 by the Tamnavulin-Glenlivet Distillery Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers Ltd., in the small village of Tomnavoulin, Ballindalloch, Banffshire. Whyte & Mackay Ltd. acquired Invergordon Distillers, and with it Tamnavulin, in 1993. Like many Speyside distilleries caught in the industry-wide downturn of the mid-1990s, Tamnavulin was mothballed in 1995. It sat silent for over a decade before Whyte & Mackay reopened and modernized the site in 2007, bringing production back online with updated equipment and a renewed focus on export markets.

Ownership of the parent company changed hands twice more in the years that followed. United Spirits acquired Whyte & Mackay, then sold the company to the Philippines-based Alliance Global Group through its subsidiary Emperador Inc. in 2014. As of July 2026, Tamnavulin Distillery is owned by Whyte & Mackay Ltd., which is itself owned by Emperador Inc., part of the Alliance Global Group. The distillery and its brand have remained under the same corporate umbrella since that 2014 transaction, giving Tamnavulin more ownership stability over the past decade than several of its Speyside neighbors.

The Whiskey

Tamnavulin draws its process water from underground springs in the Easterton hills, naturally filtered through ancient limestone, while cooling water comes from the River Livet itself. The distillery uses exclusively unpeated malted barley, milled and mashed in an 11-tonne full-lauter stainless-steel mash tun that runs 22 mashes a week. Fermentation takes place in nine stainless steel washbacks over 57 to 60 hours, a relatively long ferment that builds fruity, estery character into the wash before distillation.

The still house holds six copper pot stills arranged as three matched pairs: three wash stills and three spirit stills. The wash stills carry horizontal lyne arms while the spirit stills use descending lyne arms, and a high cut point during spirit collection is a deliberate choice that steers the new make toward a light, grassy, delicately fruity character rather than a heavier, oilier spirit.

New make spirit goes first into American White Oak ex-bourbon casks for its primary maturation. From there, Tamnavulin has built its identity around a second finishing period in a different cask type: Oloroso and other sherry casks, red wine casks that have held Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Grenache, or Pinot Noir, port pipes, and even Sauvignon Blanc casks for a white wine finish. This layered, multi-cask approach runs through the core range, including the Tamnavulin Sherry Cask Edition Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whiskey, the Tamnavulin Double Cask (matured in ex-bourbon barrels and finished in ex-sherry casks, released in 2016 to mark the distillery's 50th anniversary), the Red Wine Cask Edition, the Port Cask Edition, the Sauvignon Blanc Cask Edition, and the more ambitious Tamnavulin 25 Year Old Diamond Anniversary, which spends an initial 20 years in American oak before a five-year finish in Moscatel casks.

Why It Matters

Tamnavulin's annual production capacity runs to 4.3 million litres of alcohol, a substantial output for a distillery that spent over a decade dark. In 2018 the site added a new bioplant and other process modifications aimed at reducing the environmental footprint of whisky-making, a move that reflects the scale at which Tamnavulin now operates within the Whyte & Mackay portfolio. For those who appreciate good whiskey, Tamnavulin's core appeal is consistency of style: a light, unpeated Speyside spirit built specifically to take on bold secondary cask influence without losing its own character underneath.

Visiting the Distillery

Tamnavulin does not maintain a permanent visitor centre and is generally closed to the public year-round. It does welcome visitors during select special events, most notably the annual Spirit of Speyside festival, when temporary tasting and retail areas open on site.
