Glen Garioch Distillery

In the Valley of the Garioch, a fertile stretch of Aberdeenshire barley country northwest of Aberdeen, Glen Garioch Distillery has been turning that grain into single malt Scotch since 1797, making it one of Scotland's oldest working distilleries. The name (pronounced "Glen Geerie") comes from the valley itself, and the distillery's history traces the entire arc of Scotch whisky's industrial evolution, from an independent local operation to a link in a global spirits conglomerate owned, as of July 2026, by Beam Suntory.

History & Heritage

John Manson founded the distillery in 1797, and it remained under the ownership of John Manson & Company until 1884, when it was bought by J.G. Thomson & Co. of Leith. William Sanderson purchased a 50 percent interest in 1886, and by 1921 William Mark Sanderson and his fellow investors held the distillery outright. Scottish Malt Distillers, part of the Distillers Company Limited, acquired Glen Garioch in 1937, folding it into the era's dominant Scotch conglomerate. Stanley P. Morrison bought the distillery in 1970, and in 1982 it became a founding distillery of Morrison Bowmore Distillers. Suntory acquired Morrison Bowmore in the mid-1980s, and when Suntory and Beam Inc. merged in 2014, Glen Garioch became part of Beam Suntory, a subsidiary of Suntory Holdings of Osaka, Japan. That chain of ownership means the distillery is owned, as of July 2026, by Beam Suntory, even though the whisky itself is still made on the original Oldmeldrum site under the Glen Garioch name.

The Whiskey

Glen Garioch draws its process water from the Handy Burn and from Coutens' Silent Spring, a mineral-rich source discovered in 1972. Barley is milled on a traditional Porteus grain mill, then mashed twice daily, four tonnes at a time, in a full-Lauter stainless steel mash tun. Fermentation runs roughly 48 to 72 hours in stainless steel washbacks. The stillhouse holds one 25,000-litre wash still and two spirit stills (11,000 and 12,000 litres), though typically only the larger spirit still is in use, and the wash still was recently converted to traditional direct-fired heating, a method that adds complexity to the spirit while cutting the distillery's carbon footprint. The stills carry unusually long lyne arms, which increase copper contact and push the new-make spirit, distilled to around 72% ABV, toward a lighter, fruitier character. Since Glen Garioch reopened in 1997, the distillery has mostly used unpeated malt, a deliberate break from its historically smokier style. Maturation happens primarily in American oak ex-bourbon and European oak ex-sherry casks, and every release is non-chill filtered. In 2023, Beam Suntory reintroduced floor maltings on site as part of a 6 million pound investment, restoring a traditional production step that had been outsourced for decades.

Why It Matters

Glen Garioch's core range, built around the 12 Year Old and the no-age-statement Founder's Reserve, has picked up consistent recognition, including a Double Gold Medal at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and a Silver award at the 2022 World Whiskies Awards. Beyond the core lineup, the distillery periodically releases small-batch, cask-strength Vintage bottlings tied to specific distillation years, along with sherry-forward expressions like the 15 Year Oloroso Sherry Cask and wood-driven releases like Virgin Oak, matured entirely in new American oak. Visiting the Distillery

Glen Garioch reopened to the public in March 2022 following Beam Suntory's 6 million pound investment, which included the restored floor maltings. The distillery, at Distillery Road, Oldmeldrum, AB51 0ES, offers guided tours and tasting experiences, including a "Bottle Your Own" cask experience drawing from a 1991 bourbon single cask. Tour prices range from roughly 8 to 22-plus pounds depending on the experience, and advance booking is recommended.
