Tierra de Agaves

Tierra de Agaves is a distinguished distillery located in Tequila, Jalisco, Mexico, known for its commitment to producing 100% agave tequilas. The company was founded in 2004 by Francisco Beckmann, a seventh-generation descendant of the Beckmann family, a lineage deeply rooted in tequila production since 1758. Francisco Beckmann established Tierra de Agaves with the vision of crafting exceptional small-batch tequilas, having retained his family's extensive agave fields after selling his stake in the Cuervo Distillery in 1992.

The distillery's approach to tequila-making emphasizes estate-grown blue agave, meticulously cultivated from the 3,500 acres of Weber Blue Agave plants that the Beckmann family has managed for generations. Their production methods are a blend of traditional and modern techniques, including cooking the agave in both autoclaves (high pressure) and earthen pits, and extracting the agave sugars using roller mills and diffusers. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, exclusively with 100% agave, and distillation is carried out using both column stills and stainless pot stills with copper coils. The aging process utilizes American White Oak, used, and Bourbon barrels, with deep well water serving as their water source.

What makes Tierra de Agaves distinctive is its unique position as one of the few tequila distilleries that owns the land where its agave is grown and harvested. This multi-generational focus on cultivating estate-grown blue agave ensures a consistent quality and a deep connection to the land. The current President, Jorge Beckmann, represents the eighth generation of this prominent tequila-producing family.

Tierra de Agaves produces several notable tequila expressions. Currently, their portfolio includes brands such as Lunazul and Casa Obsidiana. Historically, they have also produced brands like Alacrán and La Certeza. In a significant development in 2008, Heaven Hill Distilleries formed a joint venture with Tierra de Agaves, specifically for the Lunazul and La Certeza Tequila brands. More recently, Tierra de Agaves debuted the Primero Plata and Primero Reposado, which are part of their Primero Collection, alongside Primero Cristalino and Primero Humoso. These are characterized as small-batch, 100% single estate agave tequilas, utilizing a proprietary yeast species to impart distinct green fruit and herbal notes.
