Goslings Rum
Goslings Rum, a family-owned business, traces its origins to 1806 when James Gosling departed England with merchandise destined for America. After 91 days at sea, his ship's charter expired, leading him to land in St. George's, Bermuda, where he established his business later that year. The company rented its iconic store on Front Street in 1824.
Goslings began formulating rum blends in 1860, developing a dark, full-bodied rum initially known as "Old Rum." This rum was first sold directly from barrels, with customers bringing their own containers for refills. By 1914, the rum was bottled in reclaimed champagne bottles from the British Officer's Mess, sealed with black wax. Customers soon began requesting the "black seal" rum, which eventually led to its official renaming as Black Seal Rum. Today, Goslings is primarily known for its range of rums, but also produces ginger beer and tonic water.
Goslings rums are crafted by blending independently aged Caribbean rums, which are then matured and blended on the island of Bermuda. The flagship Black Seal Rum is a blend of pot still and continuous still rums, aged for three to six years in charred American oak (ex-bourbon) barrels. This aging process contributes to a complex character with notes of caramel, vanilla, and spice. While Goslings is renowned for its rums, one notable expression, Goslings Family Reserve Old Rum Rye, is an aged rum that undergoes a three-year finish in once-used rye whiskey barrels, resulting in a distinct mahogany color.
What makes Goslings distinctive is its deep connection to Bermuda, having been a family-owned business for eight generations. Black Seal Rum is not only a key ingredient in Bermuda fish chowder but is also essential for the island's national drink, the Dark 'n Stormy, for which Goslings holds the trademark. The Black Seal Rum has received accolades, including the Platinum Medal and "Best in Class" from the Beverage Tasting Institute, recognized for its rich, intricate flavor profile that balances butterscotch, vanilla, and caramel with a unique savory-meets-sweet character. Other notable expressions include Gold Seal Rum, Family Reserve Old Rum, and Papa Seal Single Barrel Bermuda Rum.
