Independence, Missouri doesn't look like a nightlife town. That's the trick.

The Square — the historic downtown block where Harry Truman once walked to work — empties out around 5pm most weekdays. The courthouse goes dark. The antique shops close. And then, quietly, the second shift starts.

Start at The Sentinel Room

We're biased, but this is where the night begins. The Sentinel Room opens at 3pm on weekdays and noon on Saturdays. By 6pm on a Friday, the cocktail lounge is filling up. The Old Fashioned menu has 38 original recipes. The whiskey library next door has 1,168+ expressions. Start with a cocktail, then wander into the Reserve Library to explore something you've never tried.

If you're on a date, grab a seat at the bar. Our bartenders are good at reading the room — they'll guide you to something you'll both like without making it awkward. The charcuterie boards are built for sharing. The flatbreads are better than they have any right to be.

Order the Sentinel's Old Fashioned first. Then ask your bartender what to try next.

Walk the Square

After a drink or two, step outside. The Square at night is something else. The courthouse is lit up. The storefronts glow. It's quiet enough to hear each other talk — which, if you're on a date, is the whole point.

Independence Square has been here since 1827. The buildings on the block date back over a century. There's a weight to the place that downtown KC doesn't have. Less noise. More character.

The Food Situation

The Square has options. Ophelia's is right around the corner — a local staple with a solid menu and a patio that's hard to leave in warm weather. Square Pizza does exactly what the name says, and does it well. If you drove in, the broader Independence area has everything from barbecue to Korean.

Back at The Sentinel, we serve flatbreads, charcuterie, and small plates — enough to keep the night going without needing to leave for a full dinner.

Why Independence

People from KC proper ask us why we're in Independence instead of Westport or the Crossroads. The answer is simple: this is where the building is. The Marinello has been here since the early 1900s. The Sentinel character comes from a newspaper that was published on this block. You can't fake that history by renting a space downtown.

Independence also means parking. Free parking. Right on the Square. Try that in Westport on a Saturday night.

The Date Night Move

Here's the play: arrive at The Sentinel Room around 6pm. Start with cocktails in the lounge. Split a charcuterie board. Move to the Reserve Library for a whiskey flight. Walk the Square. Come back for one more drink.

Total cost for two people: somewhere between $60 and $120 depending on how adventurous you get. Total time: three to four hours of actual conversation in a room designed for it.

That's the night. No Uber surge pricing. No waiting in line. No shouting over the music.

Just whiskey, conversation, and a room that was built for both.

208 W Lexington Ave, Independence, MO. Open Tue–Sat.
